AI for Africa by Africa: Google’s AI Research Center Tackles Local and Global Challenges

As a Technology Content Creator who is passionate about digital and tech innovation,  I was honoured to be invited  by Google to witness first hand how a team of researchers in Africa is leveraging AI in groundbreaking projects and initiatives.  Nestled in Ghana’s vibrant capital, Accra, a team of researchers is working at the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI). Established in 2018, Google’s AI research centre in Accra is the first of its kind on the continent, and its mission is as ambitious as the technology it wields –  to harness the power of AI to address Africa’s pressing issues and contribute to advancements with global impact.

The centre’s approach is one of collaboration, working closely with universities, startups, and policymakers across Africa. This focus on local context is central to their success  given the varied and peculiar challenges Africa is faced with where AI could be beneficial, sometimes even more so than in other places.

Here’s a glimpse into some of the key areas where Google AI Accra is leveraging Artificial Intelligence to tackle some of Africa’s pressing challenges and making an impact:  

1.  Building a More Detailed Africa

Imagine  navigating a city without advanced GPS or limited navigating systems.   This was the reality of travelling in some parts of Africa until recently. Google AI Accra tackled this by leveraging  satellite imagery and machine learning to map the continent’s built environment. This project resulted in a fourfold increase in the number of African buildings on Google Maps, bringing the total to over 250 million. This not only improves navigation but also provides valuable data for urban planning and development efforts which it achieved through the use of the AI model,  Open Building.

2. AI for Environmental Sustainability

Climate change remains a critical issue of global concern with Africa  particularly prone and vulnerable to the after effects.  With a focus on sustainability initiatives across Africa, Google AI Accra is playing a crucial role in environmental sustainability initiatives  including a project that focuses  on flood forecasting. By analysing weather patterns, historical data, and real-time information, researchers are developing AI models to predict floods with greater accuracy. This empowers communities to prepare and mitigate potential damage should such occurrences happen. The flood forecasting has been used to help mitigate damage across countries in Africa that experience flooding.

3.  Ensuring Food Security

Food security  remains a major concern across Africa. Google AI Accra is exploring how AI can be used to improve agricultural practices. One project focuses on using machine learning to identify crop diseases at an early stage and also an AI model with weather forecasting to determine optimal seasons to plant crops. This allows farmers to take early action, minimising crop loss and improving yields. Additionally, researchers are developing AI models to predict locust swarms, a devastating threat to food security.

4. Healthcare Innovation with AI

AI has the potential to revolutionise healthcare delivery, especially in underserved areas. Google AI Accra is exploring applications in maternal health. One project involves using AI to analyse ultrasound images, potentially assisting healthcare workers in early detection of complications during pregnancy. This could be particularly impactful in remote areas with limited access to specialists.

5. Language: A Bridge to AI Solutions

Africa is the world’s most linguistically diverse continent. Google AI Accra recognizes the importance of local languages for inclusive AI development. The lab is working on improving speech recognition and machine translation for under-resourced African languages. This will not only make AI more accessible to a wider population but also unlock valuable data and insights specific to the African context.

6. Google’s Project Relate: A Helping Hand for Clear Communication

For people with speech impairments, clear communication can be a daily hurdle. Google’s Project Relate aims to bridge that gap with an Android app designed to empower individuals and enhance their interactions with others and technology.

Project Relate tackles communication challenges in three key ways:

Listen: This feature acts as live closed captioning, transcribing spoken words into text in real-time. Users can then copy and paste the text for easier communication or let others read what they want to say.

Repeat: Project Relate offers a voice repetition function. Users can speak a phrase, and the app will restate it using a clear, synthesised voice. This can be particularly helpful in face-to-face interactions where background noise or speech patterns might hinder understanding.

Assistant: Project Relate integrates seamlessly with Google Assistant. Users can speak directly to the Assistant through the app, enabling them to control smart home devices, set reminders, or access information using voice commands.

Currently only available on Android devices, Project Relate holds promise for improving the lives of people with non-standard speech. By facilitating clearer communication and interaction with technology, the app empowers users to participate more actively in everyday conversations and tasks.

The Google AI research centre has partnered with a local foundation; Talking Tipps Africa Foundations, to make Project Relate accessible to help people suffering from speech impediments, which is the aim of the foundation. Smartphones are however needed to access Project relate, therefore I’m using this platform to appeal to individuals and businesses willing to donate Android smartphones to help the course. Beyond Research: Building an AI Ecosystem in Africa

Google AI Accra doesn’t just focus on research. The lab actively fosters the growth of an AI ecosystem in Africa. They achieve this through partnerships with universities, offering training programs, and creating open-source datasets like the “Open Buildings” dataset, which is being used by organisations like the UN for development purposes.

The work happening at Google AI Accra is a testament to the potential of AI to address complex challenges and improve lives. By focusing on local needs and fostering collaboration, the lab is not only shaping the future of AI in Africa but also contributing to advancements that benefit the entire world.
