Ghana Gears Up for Nationwide 5G with Shared Network Infrastructure

With the recent internet challenges being experienced throughout Ghana, The country has recently taken a big leap forward in its technological journey with the announcement of a brand new 5G license aimed at improving internet connectivity and speeds within the country. But here’s the twist: unlike traditional models, this license isn’t going to individual Telecommunication Networks.

Ghana is adopting a shared infrastructure approach, spearheaded by a company called the Next-Gen Infrastructure Company (NGIC). This means NGIC, a collaboration between the government, several industry players, and even tech giants like Microsoft and Nokia, will build and maintain the 5G network. Existing telecom operators like MTN, AirtelTigo, and Telecel, along with any new entrants, can then lease access to this network to provide 5G services to their customers.

This approach offers some key advantages:

  • Faster and Wider Coverage: By sharing resources, NGIC can roll out 5G across the country much quicker and potentially at a lower cost. This means Ghanaians in more areas can experience the benefits of blazing-fast internet speeds.
  • A More Level Playing Field: The shared network ensures that even smaller telcos can compete and offer 5G services, fostering a more balanced market.
  • Affordable Access: The government hopes this model will lead to more competitive pricing, making 5G accessible to a wider range of Ghanaians.

There are already whispers that MTN, the current market leader, might be exploring its own separate 5G strategy. But for now, the focus is on NGIC bringing 5G to the masses. The company is expected to launch services within the next six months, with plans to expand to other parts of Africa in the future.

This is an exciting development for Ghana’s digital transformation especially for the country suffering from terrible internet connectivity from major telcos. 5G promises to revolutionize everything from mobile banking and education to healthcare and entertainment. With a shared network infrastructure in place, Ghana is well-positioned to reap the rewards of this next-generation technology if implemented properly.

But for now, Ghanaians would have to endure the abysmal internet speeds offered as well as availability.
